“And while I live, I’ll ne’er fly from a man.” – Joan la Pucelle (Joan of Arc), who features as a character in Henry IV Part 1 by William Shakespeare, here challenges the Dauphin (King Charles of France) to a duel with swords to prove her worthiness as an ally in the war on England.
One of the original female badass super heroes of early English literature, she beats the Dauphin in single combat, citing the Virgin Mary as the source of her power, and causing the King to fall in love with her and agree to let her lead his armies into battle. Sadly, she has a tragic end, but she was an amazing woman (who actually lived) and here, a kickass character as penned by Billy Shakespeare. In fact, her words quoted here could be seen as an early feminist cry from over 400 years ago.
